Electrical fault finding in Tenerife

An RCD that keeps tripping, sockets that stopped working, lights that flicker. We find the fault by measurement, circuit by circuit, before replacing anything.

Our method

  1. Identify what trips. Main switch (overload), RCD (earth leakage) or a single breaker (short circuit or overload on one circuit).
  2. Split the installation. Circuits are isolated one by one to find which one carries the fault.
  3. Measure. Insulation resistance at 500 V DC on the faulty circuit; leakage current with a clamp meter; appliances disconnected and tested separately.
  4. Locate. Junction boxes, outdoor fittings and appliances opened in order of likelihood, not at random.
  5. Repair and retest. The circuit is tested again and the RCD trip time checked before we leave.

The five usual causes in Tenerife

#CauseTypical sign
1Moisture and salt in outdoor boxes, garden and pool lightsTrips after rain, calima or cleaning
2Water heater (termo) element leaking to earthTrips when the termo heats up, often at night
3Washing machine, dishwasher or oven faultTrips when the appliance starts a cycle
4Too many circuits on one RCDRandom tripping, no single culprit
5Damaged cable: drilled, crushed or rodent damageTrips permanently on one circuit

If it is the main switch that trips rather than the RCD, the cause is usually overload: too many loads for the contracted power. That is solved by spreading loads or reviewing the potencia contratada, not by a bigger breaker.
